The Sillar Stonecutters - 2018
In the Arequipa province, south of Peru, lie the Añashuayco sillar quarries. They were formed and sculpted by the skilled local Stonecutters for more than a century, who work without the use of modern tools and machinery. They transform the volcanic rock into blocks, which where once used by the Spaniards to build the city of Arequipa in the 16th century. Although isolated for hundreds of years, the recent economic boom in Peru resulted in a very rapid expansion of the city. Troublesome and informal urban developments engulfed the quarries and began destroying them, putting an important Peruvian heritage at risk of extinction.
